Best practices for granting from your donor-advised fund

Empowering our donors to create the change that matters to them is at the heart of what we do. Donor-advised funds (DAF) make it easy for you to give to the causes you cherish and make lasting change in your communities. Don’t know how to get started? Keep reading for manageable best practices and tips to make granting out of your DAF habitual.

  1. Regular granting - Granting from your DAF each year ensures your generosity is making a difference today. While there is no required distribution attached to DAFs, creating a consistent granting strategy, such as setting an annual or quarterly schedule or percentage you want to grant out each year, ensures your giving remains intentional and helps strengthen communities today and in the future.
  2. Disaster resiliency – Strong communities start with proactive giving. Oftentimes, disaster strikes without warning and donations surge. People far and wide come together to support communities in need. However, reactive giving isn’t always enough. Non-profits need year-round funding to build resilience, strengthen communities, and respond to disasters effectively. By granting proactively, you can support the causes you cherish before disaster happens, not just after.
  3. Collaborative funds – You can collaborate with other donors through Thrivent Charitable to make an even greater impact. Thrivent Charitable’s collaborative funds respond to current community needs and drive meaningful change. Our current collaborative funds include:
    • Thrivent Charitable Community Fund - Supporting collaborative organizations which address disparities in access and offer programming for emerging local, national, and international needs pursuant to systemic and sustainable change.
    • Disaster Response and Resiliency Fund- Supporting immediate and long-term resources and relief for individuals and communities affected by natural and human-instigated disasters.
    • Health and Human Services Fund - Supporting programs and services seeking to improve people's health and/or address basic needs.
    • Education Fund - Supporting educational programs and services benefiting communities in need.
    • Lutheran Collaborative Funds - Supporting programs and services of church bodies—ELCA, LCMS and WELS—and their ministries.
    • Ecumenical and Interfaith Fund - Supporting programs and services of ministries involving people across different religious faiths.
